FAQ's about Counseling
How do I know if I should begin counseling?
People begin counseling for many different reasons. Some start therapy because they are feeling anxious, depressed, or overwhelmed with stress in their lives. Others begin counseling to help them deal with relationship or family problems, self-esteem issues, body image problems, eating disorders, or need support while they are grieving a loss. Many people who start therapy are feeling stuck in their lives or feel as if they've lost meaning in their relationships or work. If you are feeling like you're ready to start counseling, it's best to find a counselor that you feel comfortable with. It's important to find the right fit when it comes to looking for a counselor.
How do I choose a counselor?
Since it's very important to find a counselor that you feel comfortable with, it may be helpful to talk to the therapist first before scheduling an appointment. You may want to ask questions about the therapist's style of counseling, their level of experience, and their education and background. Although it's helpful to talk to potential counselors before the consultation appointment, it usually takes a few weeks in counseling to know if it's the right fit.
What happens in counseling?
Counseling or therapy usually entails weekly sessions. Sometimes people find it helpful to see a therapist more than once a week, depending on their circumstances. The length of therapy is determined by the client, in collaboration with the counselor. Usually therapy is a long-term commitment. However, in some circumstances only a short amount of time is needed. It's important to stay in counseling as long as you feel is necessary for your situation and needs.
Can I use my insurance for counseling?
You may use insurance for therapy. I am currently a provider under Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas and Seton Healthcare. Each insurance plan offers different benefits including the amount of the deductible, number of sessions covered, etc., so it's important to learn about your particular plan. I can also submit for coverage as an out-of-network provider if you have another type of insurance coverage.
